Microphysical properties of stratocumulus clouds

چکیده
Data collected in situ with the Meteo-France Merlin-IV instrumented aircraft during the EUCREX mission 206 are analyzed to document cloud properties that are relevant to the calculation of cloud radiative properties. Ascents and descents through the cloud layer reveal that Ž . most of the vertical profiles of liquid water content LWC and droplet sizes are close to adiabatic profiles. Analysis of horizontal legs shows that sub-adiabatic regions are characterized by reduced droplet concentrations, while droplet sizes remain close to their adiabatic values at that level. Statistics of LWC, droplet concentration and droplet mean volume radius normalized by their adiabatic values are presented for four distinct regions of the cloud layer. This information is provided for tests of a parameterization of optical thickness based on the adiabatic model. q 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

On the importance of cumulus penetration on the microphysical and optical properties of stratocumulus clouds
Owing to their extensive spatial coverage, stratocumulus clouds play a crucial role in the radiation budget of the earth. Climate models need an accurate characterisation of stratocumulus in order to provide an accurate forecast. However, remote sensing as well as in-situ observations reveal that on several occasions, cumulus clouds present below the stratocumulus, often have a significant impa...

متن کاملMicrophysical Structure of Simulated Marine Stratocumulus: Effects of Physical and Numerical Approximations
Over the past decade or so the evolution and equilibria of persistent decks of stratocumulus climatologically clinging to the edge of summertime subtropical highs have been an issue of increased scientific inquiry. The particular interest in the microphysical structure of these clouds stems from a variety of hypotheses which suggest that anthropogenic influences or biogenic feedbacks may alter ...

1. Introduction Warm stratiform and stratocumulus clouds cover enormous areas of the Earth and play a crucial role in the radiative balance of the Earth and contribute significantly to precipitation. Microphysical properties of stratiform clouds were measured by research aircrafts in course of several national and international field experiments. Using these data, many useful statistical result...
متن کاملSimulations of marine stratocumulus using a new microphysical parameterization scheme
A new microphysical scheme that uses lognormal basis functions to represent cloud and drizzle Ž . drop spectra is presented. The scheme is incorporated in a two-dimensional 2-D eddy-resolving model and applied to the simulation of a stratocumulus cloud deck based on a sounding from the Atlantic Stratocumulus Transition Experiment. Firstly, the philosophy behind the design of the scheme is discu...

This paper discusses aircraft observations and large-eddy simulation (LES) modeling of 15 May 2008, North Sea boundary-layer clouds from the EUCAARIIMPACT field campaign. These clouds are advected from the northeast by the prevailing lower-tropospheric winds and featured stratocumulus-over-cumulus cloud formations. An almost-solid stratocumulus deck in the upper part of the relatively deep, wea...
